The holiday season in Cleveland is full of activities with wide range of events for everyone. Starting with University Circle, on December 4th there will be the annual Circle Fest in Wade Oval, which will incorporate the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Winter Lights Lantern Festival into the mix of festivities. There will also be horse drawn carriage rides, ice carving, food trucks, a holiday market, and live music. Cleveland History Center at the Western Reserve Historical Society will be featuring a special exhibit on Cleveland’s holiday traditions and pastimes. They will also be offering reserved tours which dive into Cleveland’s past, exploring its many ethnic and cultural groups. The tours will take place December 1rst, 8th, 15th, and 29th. The Cleveland Botanical Garden will participating in the celebrations with special lights and plant displays through December 31rst. If you’re looking to do some shopping, Tower City will be hosting the Cleveland Bazaar Artisan Market Pop-up on December 17th and 18th. To finish off the month of December, Cleveland Pops Orchestra will be ringing in the New Year with their annual concert and party on December 31st at Severance Hall.

MONTHLY FEATURE: SALT

Cleveland’s food scene is one that has been gaining more and more national acclaim over the recent years. This is thanks to local chefs like Zack Bruell, Doug Katz, Rocco Whalen, and of course Michael Simon. One pioneer chef who is in this same category is Jill Vedda. She is chef and part owner of Salt in Lakewood’s Edwards Park neighborhood. Chef Vedda, who has been nominated for multiple James Beard awards, changes Salt’s menu typically every 10 weeks, challenging herself to work with ingredients which are fresh and accessible. She also makes an effort to be sure that she has options for most diets, including vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten free. Her menu is centered around smaller curated plates, focusing on combining different food elements which balance each other. Diners who are looking for a full meal are encouraged to order 3 to 4 dishes. The interior of the restaurant is simple and inviting, with exposed brick, high ceilings, and warm lighting, which all work together to create a modern aesthetic. Salt begins its 31st menu, since opening in 2016, on December 1st. They are open Monday & Thursday, 5pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday, 5pm to 11pm, and Sunday 5pm to 9pm.

Kurentovanje (koo-rahn-toh-VAHN-yay), known locally as “Slovenian Mardi Gras”, is a Slovenian festival that takes place in Cleveland’s St. Clair Superior neighborhood. It is a celebration of the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The main characters of the event are the Kurenti, who are Slovenian mythical creatures who scare away winter. While the event technically takes place on Saturday, February 18th, the week previous will be filled with festivities leading up to the special celebration. There will be educational opportunities: a Slovenian cooking demonstration, a wine tasting, a special exhibit at the Slovenian Museum, and dancing. This all leads up to the annual 5K race and Kurentovanje parade and festival. The 5K race will begin at 9am and the parade will begin at 12 noon. The festival will begin at 1pm and will feature Slovenian food and drinks, face painting for kids, musical acts, and cultural performances. MONTHLY FEATURE: PIONEER

It seems as though barbeque restaurants in Cleveland have been popping up everywhere in recent years. One restaurant of the genre which has had a good start at setting itself at the top of the list is the newly opened Pioneer. All barbecued items on the menu are cooked over open fire Argentinian wood-burning grill which gives the restaurant a distinct smell reminiscent of a campfire. The restaurant and bar is located in the impressive Intro Cleveland apartment complex, which opened in April of 2022. Pioneer is themed around the outdoors and camping, from a kayak greeting you as you enter, to the thermoses they use to serve water in, the coolers they use to serve drinks in, and even the Airstream camper located on their patio which is converted into a bar. The space doubles as a sports bar with a plethora of screens to catch your favorite team. Pioneer is open Tues-Thurs, 4:30pm to 11pm, Friday, 4:30pm-12am, Saturday, 10am to 12am, and Sunday, 10am to 10pm with Brunch, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 2pm.

The St. Lawrence Seaway is a shipping route which begins where the St. Lawrence River meets the Atlantic Ocean, and although it technically ends at the north eastern end of Lake Erie in Port Colborne, Ontario, it gives sea access to all the Great Lakes. The seaway is an avenue by which the Great Lakes region is able to obtain goods and materials without having to ship items from ports in cities like New York, Boston, San Diego, and others along the east and west coasts. Depending on what items are being transported, it is actually more cost-effective to ship through the St. Lawrence Seaway, as shipping containers do not have to be split up and transported on trains or individually on semi-trucks. As a result of the Pandemic, we have all become too familiar with the term “supply-chain issues”. This unfortunate phenomenon, however, has had a silver lining as it has created opportunity for the Port of Cleveland. Our city’s port is unique in that it is the only one in the Great Lakes with regular shipping container service. This makes it a vital resource not only for the city of Cleveland but the Great Lakes region beyond. In 2021 the port saw a 69% increase in traffic as a direct effect of the shipping issues the country faces even to this day. Although data figures for the year 2022 have not been calculated, they expect to have similar numbers to what they saw in 2021. As the port looks to the future it is investing in expansion and infrastructure updates, as well as renovating its facilities. They recently received a $27 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation which is helping to fund these advancements. They expect to be finished with this project by April 2023 and anticipate the improvements lasting 30 to 40 years.

Jacobs Entertainment Inc. obtained its replacement, the Lady Caroline, on May 8th, and the ship began cruises in June. The brand-new cruise ship is 120 ft. long and has 15,000 sq. ft. of space with 4 decks. You can also spend some time at one of the boats 4 bars including on the open-air sky deck. The Lady Caroline features lunch, brunch, dinner, and special holiday cruises. They set sail 7 days a week, 2 times a day: once for lunch and once for dinner. In Cleveland’s Goodrich-Kirtland Park neighborhood (also known as Asia Town), not far from Downtown, you will find a bustling business district converted from an old factory. Tyler Village, named after the historic factory’s owner, is a 1 million sq. ft. mixed use complex. Within this merchant zone you will find a plethora of locally owned businesses including a gem called The Bake Shop & Café. It is owned by local restaurateur, Shawnda Moye, and while she offers an excellent menu of baked goods and sandwiches, she also makes some exceptional biscuits. They are so popular, in fact, that she decided to open a satellite operation in the Hingetown neighborhood on Cleveland’s near west side. The Roaming Biscuit, which just recently opened, is only operating on the weekends but is already very popular. Some favorite biscuit options are The O.G. (with bacon, egg, and cheese), and The Cinny (a cinnamon biscuit with an almond vanilla glaze). They also offer a daily special biscuit which rotates. LOCAL INTEREST: YYTIME FOOD

The idea behind Cleveland’s newest food hub was to bring a more contemporary approach to dining in our city’s Asia Town neighborhood. Sheng Long Yu, who has opened a number of popular Asian restaurants in the Cleveland area, including Kenko Sushi, Dagu Rice Noodle, and Shinto Steakhouse in Strongsville, is the mastermind behind this new concept around 8 years in the making. The food hall will have servers but menu items will be ordered on your phone and then delivered to your table. The former National Tire and Battery building, at East 30th and Payne Ave, in which the new hall is housed, boasts 10,000 sq. ft. of space with plenty of seating, a large kitchen, and a room which has future plans as a small arcade. They will feature bao (steamed buns), dumplings, izakaya skewers, bubble tea, and more. Sheng Long Yu will also be moving his Dagu Rice Noodle into the space. Yu’s inspiration came from the fact that, in his opinion, Cleveland’s Asia Town has some catching up to do in terms of modernization. The food hall is expected open this month, although an official date is not set yet, but keep an eye out because YYTime Food is definitely experience you won’t want to miss out on.

MONTHLY FEATURE: BUTCHER AND THE BREWER

This month’s feature is a local favorite which is well established within the Cleveland restaurant community. Butcher and the Brewer is located downtown in the East 4th Street District. The area is known for its wide array of dining and entertainment options, and this local brewery provides a unique experience within the neighborhood, offering an excellent selection of craft brewed beer and small sharable plate options. Some of the popular menu items include the beef sliders, the crispy pork belly, spicy patatas bravas (fried potatoes), the bone marrow, and the crispy pork shank. The brew pub occupies a turn of the century building, which was opened initially as a department store, and still retains its original hand carved wooden stair case. They will be celebrating their 10th year in operation this coming September. Their operating hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 4pm-11pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm-11pm, and Sunday 3pm-9pm. On the 17th of February they will have a special event named “Stout It Out Loud” which will feature over 25 brewery’s (mostly local) Stout style beers, paired with fresh shucked oysters. LOCAL INTEREST: PORT OF CLEVELAND IMPROVEMENT UPDATE

Cleveland is fortunate enough to have access to one of our nations five Great Lakes, all of which are part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Thanks to this vital natural resource our city’s port is considered international. The Port of Cleveland is involved in $4.7 billion in economic annual activity, and moves approximately 13 million tons of cargo per year. Their impact also includes $240 million in state and local tax revenue and is linked to over 20,000 jobs. They are essential in making Cleveland more competitive not only on the local and national level, but also globally. Now, the port of Cleveland, as part of a larger improvement plan, and along with a grant from the US Department of Transportation, is reinvesting in its future. Their board recently approved the appropriation of $32.1 million in state and federal grants to help renovate and modernize the port. Part of the rehabilitation will include their electrification program, which is part of their Net Zero Emissions Master Plan, whose strategy is to have net zero emissions by 2050. MONTHLY FEATURE: THE SWEET FIX BAKERY

Local chef and restauranteur Eric Rogers opened his restaurant, Black Box Fix, in 2015. He pulled much of his inspiration from the lessons he learned cooking with his grandmother as a child. The initial location for his popular eatery was in Cleveland Heights’ Cedar Lee District but he later moved it to Legacy Village in 2017. That same year an opportunity presented itself to open a bakery in his restaurant’s former location with coowners Robert and Allison Craig. The Sweet Fix Bakery, formerly known as Craig’s Divine Desserts, immediately became a neighborhood favorite. They offer everything from peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, and cupcakes, to cookies, brownies, and ice cream. They also have vegan and gluten free options available. Meijer Fairfax Market, just off the Cleveland Clinic Campus, recently partnered with the bakery, to offer prepackaged sweets at their store. The Sweet Fix Bakery is open Tuesday-Thursday, 9am to 4:30pm, Friday, 9am to 7:30pm, and Saturday, 12noon to 5pm.

LOCAL INTEREST: CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART PRINT FAIR

Our city has many things to offer which are culturally significant. The Intercontinental Hotel Cleveland is lucky enough to be less than a mile from the neighborhood with the highest concentration of arts and culture in the United States: University Circle. Within this neighborhood you will find the Cleveland Museum of Art, which typically ranks within the top 5 best art museums in the nation. Every year, in conjunction with the Print Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Museum of Art puts on the Fine Print Fair. This year will be the 39th annual fair and it will be taking place April 25th to 28th. The event will feature 15 print dealers from around the nation, and will include one local art collection called Verne Gallery. The fair also doubles as a benefit for the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Department of Prints and Drawings and is free and open to the public. The only day that will be ticketed is Thursday, April 25th, which is a special Collector’s Night from 5:30pm-7:30pm, and tickets are $75. Friday, the fair will run from 10am-6pm. Saturday and Sunday it will go from 10am-5pm. There will also be a special raffle which can be entered throughout the weekend.

MONTHLY FEATURE: CLASSICAL REVOLUTION

When you think about Classical Music, the first thing that comes to mind will probably not be a dive bar. Clevelanders tend to do things a little bit differently, however. Mixing our world class culture of the arts and our city’s working-class spirit is something that you will see intertwined perfectly at Happy Dog in Cleveland’s Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. The popular night spot doubles as a music venue with typically 3 to 4 shows a week. They are known for their hotdogs, with a plethora of toppings available, from escarole, chopped onions, and sunny side up eggs, to confit pulled pork, sliced cucumbers and even fruit loops. Once a month, several musicians, typically from the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra or the Cleveland Institute of Music, descend upon the Happy Dog, to serenade their audience with a wide array of Classical compositions. This months Classical Revolution night at Happy Dog will take place on Wednesday, April 17th. The show usually lasts from 8pm till 11pm. If you do go, try to arrive early so you can get a good seat, as the shows can get pretty crowded. Make sure you also check-out Happy Dog’s unique menu and their excellent selection of domestic, international, and craft beers.

LOCAL INTEREST: PLAYHOUSE SQUARE ACQUIRES GREYHOUND STATION

Cleveland’s Playhouse Square may soon expand north with the purchase of the historic Greyhound Station at East 13th and Chester in Downtown. The building is a beautiful example of Streamline Modern architecture, which is a style of Art Deco that gained popularity in the 1930’s. It was designed by William Strudwick Arrasmith, known in particular for his iconic work on bus stations across the nation. Because of this, our local Greyhound Station is also included on the National Register of Historic Places. Likely future plans which Playhouse Square Foundation has for the 36,000 sq. ft. property include an entertainment space (Jazz Club, Supper Club, etc.), or possibly an education center. Acquisition talks completed in late March, and the deal was sealed on April 4th with a purchase of $3.35 million. There are also rumors of other plans in the works for Playhouse Square to develop some of the public parking lots around the Greyhound Station. The official plans for the bus station will be announced at later date when Playhouse Square Foundation has decided on its use.

MONTHLY FEATURE: 27 COFFEE CLUB

On the East Bank of the Cuyahoga River, you will find one of Cleveland’s most popular entertainment districts. The Flats East Bank opened in 2015, and with it came new housing and a wide selection of new restaurants along the river. Since then, many restaurants have rotated out of the quarter (partially due to the effects of the pandemic) and new concepts have replaced them. One of the newest editions to the district is a popular restaurant and coffee house known as 27 Coffee Club. The name is derived from the 27 Club, which is a pop culture reference to the group of artists, actors, and musicians, who unfortunately passed at the young age of 27 (Jimmy Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, etc.) The restaurant is owned by popular musician and local, MGK, and is adorned with paintings and pop art. Coffee may seem like the main draw but the food definitely holds its own. They offer breakfast items as well as, salads, wraps, and stone oven pizzas. I recommend giving the Shrimp and Grits or the Baked Egg Scramble a try. The establishment also has a full-service bar. They are open Monday through Thursday 7am-5pm (kitchen till 3pm), Friday and Saturday 7am-9pm (kitchen till 8pm), and Sunday 7am-6pm (kitchen till 4pm).

MONTHLY FEATURE: AFFETTATI

Little Italy’s small business community has a new charming addition to its ranks. Affettati, which is located at 12401-03 Mayfield Rd, is a unique arrival to the neighborhood, and has received a warm welcoming. Owner Kevin Dawe is no stranger to the food industry, having worked at his family’s business, Spoon Market in Wooster, Ohio, from a very young age. From 2016 till about 2020 he worked for Butcher and the Brewer, in downtown Cleveland, then moved on to Pinhook Meats, in Lucas, Ohio. Dawe got an opportunity to embark on his own endeavor this past year, looking to offer good sandwiches and smoked meats for a good price. His chance came in the form of an opening at a property in Little Italy’s main business district along Mayfield Rd.

The name Affettati means cold-cuts in Italian, and is fitting given Dawe’s extensive experience in the business. His main attraction are the sandwiches which are prepared to go. The bread is made in house and is Focaccia style, and his cold-cuts, and sausages are provided by Pinhook Meats. The menu is simple and has vegetarian options, and I can personally recommend the prosciutto sandwich, which comes with ricotta cheese, mozzarella, red onion, and arugula. At the moment the shop is open Thursday through Saturday, 11am till 6pm, and Dawe is looking to extend his hours in the future. For now, you won’t find Affettati on google maps so if you have any questions, or need directions, you can stop by the Concierge Desk to inquire.

LOCAL INTEREST: REVISIONING THE DETROIT-SUPERIOR BRIDGE

The Detroit-Superior Bridge is one of Cleveland’s most prolific thruways, and from 1918 till 1954 the sub-level of the bridge was used for a popular Cleveland streetcar line. For years after its closure, the underside of the bridge sat dormant, but in the past few years the city has periodically opened it for recreational activities, tours, and most recently, it hosted a Summer Solstice event. Now, new plans have emerged to turn this once overlooked space into something more permanent for the community. Cuyahoga County, with the help of a $7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, is now conducting a feasibility and engineering plan. The idea is for the former railway to be turned into a “park in the sky.”

The project is being spearheaded by Cuyahoga County Executive, Chris Ronayne, and has been coined the name Low Line, which is a call to New York’s High Line (a public park built on an elevated historic freight line). While the project is still in its initial stages and no build date has been set, it is still a promising reimagining of one of Cleveland’s many historic overlooked spaces.

New chef brings vibrant, global flavors to Table 45 in Cleveland

Jagjit Singhʼs diverse culinary background spans India, Dubai and Switzerland. Now, his cooking skills are being

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A chef born in India, with experience cooking in the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, who ran a specialized eatery with Middle Eastern and European flavors and who once roomed with a Mexican chef has brought his global cuisine to Cleveland.

Jagjit Singh is in his third month with Table 45, one of the more intriguing hotel restaurants in Northeast Ohio. It’s located in the InterContinental Cleveland Hotel.

The menu brims with flavors. Many dishes keep an Asian spin, some now with an infusion of carefully prepared Indian spices and ingredients. But it’s not just Singh’s global cuisine background that he brings to the table. It’s his love of feeding people. And that started with his mother.

His mother and sister work in hospitality in his native land. His sister works front-ofhouse and comes home at 2 or 3 in the morning.

“My mom is still up, because she knows she has to feed her before she goes to sleep. It’s part of her agenda for the day,” he said. “And she loves to do it.”

That simple act also is what gives Singh joy in his job.

“I love feeding people,” he said. Growing up, other kids mulled careers as an engineer or doctor or were undecided, but Singh knew at age 8 or 9.

“I changed my passion into my profession,” he said. “I always knew what I wanted to do – hotel management.”

He loved the restaurant aspect, but the foundation of hospitality – learning about accounting and other principles - helped launch his career.

Singh – who comes from Punjab in the northern part of India – moved to Dubai for sevenplus years. He started with modern Indian cuisine restaurants and shifted to hotels. Then he had an opportunity to open a hotel restaurant in Zurich, where he lived for about three years.

He got used to different clientele – and weather.

“From the direct heat to the alps,” he said.

He ran a concept known as Soul Street – a “street-food global concept” that encompassed Latin American, European, Middle Eastern and Asian food in one place.

“That gave me the confidence of trying different cuisines - not just from a customer’s perspective, from an actual chef’s perspective,” Singh said. “Because all of those cuisines being done in that restaurant were from chefs from that region.”

That authentic training formed the basis of cooking knowledge for Singh, who said it wasn’t just “making a replica, this is how it’s supposed to be.”

He was learning, as he put it, “from the masters of their own culture.”

At Soul Street in Zurich he roomed with a Mexican chef for several years, and he learned cooking and culture. He and another chef wanted to grow their own micro-herbs so they started a garden. They cleaned an abandoned area, and three to four months later, the yield started.

“Every day we would have something new coming out of there,” he said.

On an off day he would satiate his love of travel by heading to Austria, France or Germany, all accessible within a few hours from Switzerland. He speaks fluent English and musters through a bit of “Swiss German” and Spanish.

He came to the United States last August; his wife is a doctor at Case Western Reserve University. It wasn’t too much of a shock; Zurich and Cleveland have similar temperatures, he said.

“I don’t want to stick to one place and not be able to grow. I do need to keep exploring new food and cultures, and I am exploring new cultures in the U.S.,” said Singh, who has traveled to Chicago and Houston.

“The most interesting part of this restaurant is it’s a global cuisine restaurant. I don’t have restrictions, I don’t have boundaries.”

That attitude fits well at Table 45.

“The more I understand about cultures, the more it helps me understand my clientele. Especially right now. Where I’m working it’s a brand everyone knows, where the clientele is not just going to be American or from Cleveland; it’s going to be from around the world.”

Paperthin semolina shell spheres are filled with sweet yogurt, tamarind sauce, mint and cilantro sauce and topped with onion-flavored butternut mash and fresh pomegranate. “The trick is you have to eat it in one bite,” he said. “In India we always use our hands for this. It’s going to be a burst of sauce, a lot of flavors happening together.” The typical street food back home, he said, is a common evening snack. The taste? An ever so slightly sour, spicy and sweet fusillade that is messy and good and has a balanced mix of textures.

Vada pao - These Vegetarian sliders, a southern / central Indian favorite, are a carb-heavy potato patty with a little masala chile, mint and tamarind sauce. They are coated with roasted garlic chutney, with coconut and peanut mixed in and are served speared with a mild shishito. The Indian population is 60% to 70% vegetarian, he said, and potatoes work well with a variety of flavors.

“I’ve been trying to introduce some Indian elements,” said Singh, including a popular butter chicken dish. And he values plating.

“To me the visual aspect of food is very important. Presentation of the food is as important as the taste. If the food is not presented nicely, the first impression is gone. If it looks good, if it looks inviting, you will want to dig into it.” (Several of his creations are served on a green bamboo leaf.)

Yes, you can get traditional dishes at Table 45 – chicken to pasta to steak and sushi, but Singh has hit the scene with a burst of flavors.

He said pastry chef Tom Francescangeli is creating “mouthwatering, global desserts.” A berry blossom cheesecake, Japanese-style, very light with matcha ice cream, is new. Also, Table 45 is serving a trending dessert called Dubai chocolate – chocolate, phyllo pastry and pistachio flavors. It’s a version of a chocolate tart. And an Italian fusion dessert is “Baba-misu,” with mascarpone and marsala mousse, espresso brioche and mocha ice cream. It yields the sweet taste of alcohol from the baba meshed with tiramisu, he said.

Clearly, there’s a fresh approach under way at Table 45 on Cleveland’s east side. Natasha Pogrebinsky recently came aboard as executive chef for the hotel, which deals with weddings, corporate affairs and other large-scale dining. Singh will use seasonal menus. He’s added a Japanese twist to some dishes. New cocktails are being introduced. And he’s open to change.

“It’s very important the team works well, and the team is learning and engaged all the time,” he said. “Because it is not just me doing the menu, it’s the team doing the menu for the whole restaurant.”

Singh said it’s imperative for his team to “become a well-oiled machine,” bringing a needed chemistry to the kitchen.

“You’re spending more time in the kitchen with your colleagues than you’re spending time with your family,” he said. “Christmas, New Year’s, Easter – you’re working.”

For the customer, it’s about the food. For Singh, it’s about preparing something they will love.

“Food talks. Regardless of your mood, you will eat. You’re sad, you’re going to eat. You’re happy, you’re going to eat.”

But feeding, he said, remains “the fun part.”
